Public Critique

Hey guys - in case you missed my tweets about it, the first page of my new manuscript, PURGE, is up for public critique here on YAtopia. Please go and add your comments if you have a few minutes, and don't pull your punches - I promise I can take it! *Commences shadow boxing...*

If you're into getting your work critiqued by... well, anyone who happens to stop by the site and read it, then this is a great way to gauge the impact your first page (or query in the case of some other workshops I've seen) is having on the reader.

BUT.

If you're not open to criticism or are likely to have your feelings hurt if people don't immediately love your work, then this really isn't the way to go.

There's nothing quite as cringeworthy as a writer who replies to valid criticism with snarkiness. Sure, a writer won't necessarily agree with every comment that's made, but there's no reason to be an arse about it. The commenter has taken the time to offer their thoughts and suggestions on your work, and that's something to appreciate - even if it stings a little.

Sometimes, you just have to take it on the chin - or get out of the ring.
